Google Maps’ New Power-Saving Mode Is Something Very Familiar

Google Maps is rolling out a clever new feature designed to extend your phone’s battery life, especially during long journeys: a black and white, greyscale interface. This isn’t just a stylistic choice; it’s a practical power-saving measure, particularly beneficial for devices with OLED screens.

How it Works

When activated, the entire Google Maps interface, including navigation, routes, and points of interest, switches from its vibrant, colorful display to a monochromatic palette. The mode strips the interface down to its most essential elements, displaying only critical information like the next turn, Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA), and remaining distance. Most details, like street names and non-essential UI elements, are removed to save power.

Rollout Status and Regions

The power-saving feature is currently in the testing phase and has been spotted in the beta version (25.44.03.824313610) of the Google Maps app for Android.

  • Available Regions: Since the feature is in beta testing, a general public release date and official list of regions have not yet been confirmed by Google. It is likely being tested globally for Android beta users.
  • Rollout Date: Google has not announced an official release timeline for the general public, but its presence in a widely available beta build suggests a wider rollout may follow in the coming months. The feature is expected to debut on Android devices first.

Why Greyscale Saves Power

OLED screens, common in many modern smartphones, work by lighting up individual pixels. Displaying vibrant colors requires more energy per pixel than displaying shades of grey. By minimizing the use of bright, saturated colors, this new mode demands less power from your screen, directly translating to longer battery life. This is particularly useful for drivers or pedestrians relying on navigation for extended periods without access to a charger.
