The king of the roguelike deckbuilders has returned. On March 5, 2026, Mega Crit officially launched Slay the Spire 2 into Steam Early Access, and the response has been nothing short of a seismic event for the indie gaming scene. After nearly seven years of waiting, fans descended upon the Spire in numbers that even the developers admit were unexpected.

Record-Breaking Launch Stats

Within 24 hours of its release, Slay the Spire 2 didn’t just break its predecessor’s record it completely obliterated it. The original game peaked at roughly 57,000 concurrent players; the sequel, however, reached a staggering peak of 282,314 concurrent users on Steam.

This performance allowed it to surpass Bungie’s highly anticipated extraction shooter, Marathon, which launched in the same window. With over 9,000 reviews already live, the game currently holds an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating 97%, proving that Mega Crit has successfully captured the lightning-in-a-bottle synergy of the first title.

A New Engine and New Ways to Play

One of the most significant shifts for the sequel is the move to the Godot engine, a transition made following the Unity pricing controversy of 2023. The result is a visually overhauled experience utilizing Spine2D for fluid, high detail animations.

Gameplay has also expanded beyond the solo climb. The headline feature is a 4player online co-op mode, allowing groups to coordinate paths, share potions, and trigger powerful “Combo” synergies. The roster has also seen a major shake-up:

  • The Necrobinder: A “sassy lich” who manages a persistent minion named Osty.
  • The Regent: A cosmic royal using a unique Stars resource that carries over between turns.
  • Returning Favorites: The Ironclad, Silent, and Defect all return with reworked card pools.

What’s Next?

Priced at $24.99 during its Early Access phase, the game already boasts more content than the 1.0 version of the original. Mega Crit has introduced Alternate Acts, ensuring that every run feels distinct by offering branching environments and entirely different boss pools. The developers expect to remain in Early Access for 12 to 24 months as they refine balance and add a “true ending.”
